The essential oil has been found to have antibacterial, anti yeast, and insecticidal action. Researchers have found that basil can kill some intestinal parasites and that the seeds and oil have mild antibiotic effects.

A tea prepared with the leaves of Ocimum sanctum is commonly used in cough, cold, mild, indigestion, diminished appetite and malaise.

The oil is reported to possess anti-bacterial and insecticidal properties. It inhibits the in vitro growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Micrococcus pyogenes var. aureus.

An infusion of the leaves is used as a stomachic in gastric disorders or children. A decoction of the root is given as a diaphoretic in malarial fevers. The seeds are mucilaginous and demulcent, and are given in disorders of genito-urinary system.

Leaves boiled with water are prescribed for cold and stomach disorders. The leaf juice is given for skin diseases internally as well as externally. The decoction of the leaves along with the tubers Orchis latifolia is considered a nourishing drink for old and weak people. Aphrodisiac virtue has been attributed to the root where powdered root with clarified butter (ghee) is prescribed. Seeds made into a paste with milk is considered a harmless preparation for the stomach troubles of infants and small children.

Basil has been used to treat a variety of conditions, including the following: anxiety and tension, congestion, coughs, colds, colic, constipation, cuts and abrasions, diarrhea, digestive disorders, dysentery, fevers, flatulence, headaches and migraines, indigestion, insect bites and stings, menstrual cramps, muscle tension, nerve pain, nervousness, sinusitis, sore throats, tiredness and lethargy.

In Ayurvedic medicine, the juice is recommended for snakebites; as a general tonic; and for chills, coughs, rheumatoid arthritis, anorexia, skin problems, amenorrhea and dysmenorrhea, malaria, and earaches, but mainly used in the cases of fever. A classic recipe advocates mixing Holy Basil, black pepper, ginger, and honey to prevent infection and to control high fevers.

Since Holy Basil has the ability to lower blood pressure, it is thought to have an affinity for the heart, as well as helping the body to adapt to new demands and stresses.

Holy Basil is used to reduce blood sugar levels as well as relieving fevers, bronchitis, asthma, stress, and canker sores. Research into its ability to reduce blood sugar levels has gone on for several decades, and is proving useful in some types of diabetes. Indian research has shown that the herb has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and fever-reducing properties, as well as inhibiting sperm production.

In Belize, it is used to bring on delayed menstruation and to relieve painful periods, as well as to treat earaches. Elsewhere it is used as an anti-inflammatory, for stomach-aches, intestinal parasites, and to lower blood sugar levels.

Mexicans use it to treat "susto", or gastrointestinal blockage. It is also used to ward off evil spirits, and as a cleansing agent.

The Ayurvedic Home Remedy Pepper

The native land of the famous Eastern spice, black pepper, is India. Black pepper beans are the dried up unripe fruits of the evergreen liana, which grows exclusively in the tropics. According to the doctors of the ancient East only black pepper increases digesting force of the stomach and the energy of the nervous system, strengthens muscles, and has no match in this.

Upon consumption, black pepper opens the phlegm (what many people suffering from chronic bronchitis vainly try to achieve), warms the organs of digestion, improves appetite, treats sour eructation, dilutes thick blood of melancholic and phlegmatic people, expels the winds from the intestines. In case of the increase in brain moisture (swelling, rise in intracranial pressure) peas of pepper should be chewed with raisins. The saliva should be periodically spit out: excess moisture will come out together with it. This procedure is to be carried out 5-10 minutes daily in the course one month. In case of quinsy, cough with phlegm, bronchitis, delay or absence of menstruation mix black pepper powder with honey: 1 table spoon of the powder with 1 glass of pure honey. Take 1 teaspoon 3-4 times a day. Also pepper with honey is used as a diuretic in case of edema and heart diseases.

For increasing the tone of the organism and improving the man's potency black pepper should be mixed with sugar in equal proportions; dissolve half the teaspoon of the mixture in a glass of milk and drink it. According to the ancients, this potion has an effect in love affairs from the moment of first consumption. A week course of treatment would essentially stimulate the organism. Black pepper powder mixed in equal proportions with henna is an excellent external remedy for the treatment of skin diseases.

By adopting from the treatises of the ancient East physicians the way of treating vitiligo with the help of black pepper, we were assured in the effectiveness of this treatment on our own medical practice (vitiligo, which appears in the decoloured areas of the skin, has practically no treatment in modern medicine). The powder of black pepper is mixed with equal amount of soybean and pea flour (it is better to use the flour from chickpeas, but if you cannot find it, usual peas would be fine). All this is mixed with chicken fat until reaching the consistence of ointment, with which the decoloured areas of skin are rubbed everyday before going to bed; this treatment lasts for 40 days.

Black pepper is a remedy for removing stones from kidneys. For this purpose take the raisins from black grapes, remove the pits, and put one pea of black pepper in their place. This remedy is taken one piece per day before lunch (better between 12 and 1pm) in the course of one week. The stones become small and are taken out with urine.

In case of radiculitis, osteochondrosis, articular pains, facial nerve neuritis, paralysis the weakened muscles are rubbed with oil, which is prepared like this: add 1 table spoon of black pepper powder to a glass of olive oil, lead to boiling on small heat, boil for 5-10 minutes, cool, filter and use for rubbing.

At the initial stage of adenoma of the prostate the following medicine is prepared. Take one part black pepper, two parts nut-galls (sold in the bazaar among spices), two parts dry pomegranate skins, and pound all this finely in a mortar or a coffee-grinder. Drink the received powder (for example, with the extract of dogrose and honey) 1 teaspoon before meal 2 times a day in the course of one month.

In the case of falling hair mix black pepper with salt (in equal proportions) and onion juice (until the formation of liquid squash), rub heavily into the hair roots, keep for 20-30 minutes before washing the hair. One can use the extract of black pepper with vodka for the same purpose (2 table spoons of pepper on a half-liter bottle, infusing in a dark place for 7 days).

It is necessary to take into account the contra-indications for all the stated kinds of internal taking of black pepper, which it has at acute inflammations of the urinary bladder and kidneys. It is prohibited to use pepper in case of anemia, allergic diseases, stomach and duodenum ulcers.

Ashwagandha and Health Solutions with Ashwagandha

Also known as Winter Cherry and Indian Ginseng, Ashwagandha is one of the most valuable herbs in the Ayurvedic medical system, dating back more than 3,000 years. Its Sanskrit name Ashwagandha literally means ‘that which has the smell of a horse’, so named because it is said to give the strength and vitality of a horse. Ashwagandha is specific for a wide range of conditions including arthritic inflammation, anxiety, insomnia, respiratory disorders, nervous disorders, gynecological disorders, male infertility and impotence.

It is a herb that enhances resistance to stress, increases stamina and promotes general well-being. Many Western herbalists refer to this herb as "Ayurvedic ginseng" because of its reputation for increasing energy, strength, and stamina, and for its ability to relieve stress. Modern research has found several types of alkaloids in it of which somniferin and withaniol are responsible for its multiple actions. The roots of the plant have been reported to have Alkaloids, Withanolides and many Glycosides.

According to the Ayurvedic system, Ashwagandha is the best herb for balancing Vata in the body. Vata governs all movement in the body, including the movement of nerve impulses throughout the nervous system. When the root is taken as a milk decoction and sweetened with honey or raw sugar, it is used to inhibit ageing and build up strength by catalysing the anabolic processes in the body.

Ashwagandha is also a proven immune-modulator, antioxidant and hormone precursor which tends to regulate important physiological functions. Research has shown that it can protect the activity of immune cells that are exposed to chemicals that would otherwise inhibit their normal function.

The antitumor activity of Withania somnifera is known and that it also enhances the effects of radiation in chemotherapy.

Ashwagandha for Sexual Debility: Ashwagandha has an affinity for the reproductive system in both men and women. It is the main rejuvenative of masculine energy used in Ayurveda, improving the quality of reproductive tissues and increasing sexual potency. It has also been used to increase libido and potency, for it is said to bestow upon its user the vitality and strength of a horse. It is often added in herbal supplements that are reputed to improve sexual desire and function. Ashwagandha has also been helping women boost their desire for sex. Long considered India's most potent sex-enhancing plant, the country's women have used Ashwagandha for years to rev up their sex drives.

Ashwagandha For Stress: Ashwagandha is considered as one of the best remedies for stress. While most adaptogens primarily work by helping the body to mobilize and maintain the physiological response to stress, Ashwagandha appears to work first and foremost by reducing the stress-related excesses of the alarmed nervous system. It improves the body's ability to maintain physical effort and helps the body adapt to various types of stress. It has also been reported to enhance mental function and memory. It acts to calm the mind and promote sound, restful sleep.

Ashwagandha as a Anti-Inflammatory Agent: Ashwagandha is an adaptogen that contains several active phytochemicals known as glycowithanolides, which research has shown may relax smooth muscles. As a natural anti-inflammatory agent, ashwagandha may help to reduce the discomfort associated with arthritis. Forty-two patients with osteoarthritis were randomly placed in two groups--one receiving ashwagandha, one a placebo. After three months, pain and disability were markedly reduced in the ashwagandha group.

Ashwagandha for Weak Memory: Ashwagandha is a medhya rasayana, helping to enhance mental ability and performance. It helps support memory and problem-solving skills and enhances the coordinated functioning of all aspects of the brain. It corrects loss of memory arising out of long term stress, illness and overwork. A 2001 study in rodents showed ashwagandha had memory boosting ability.

Ashwagandha is also used for High Blood Pressure, as an Immune-Modulator and an AntiOxidant.

Overall Ashwagandha is a promising herb in many different fields.

Six Herbal Remedies For Candida

The treatment methods for Candida are wide-ranging since the symptoms that it causes are so broad. Possible cures, such as probiotics, changing one’s diet so that it is as sugar-free and carb-free as possible, therefore depriving Candida of it’s main source of food and riding yourself of antibiotic treatment, which many consider the original cause of Candida are all popular choices. But if none of those options work for you, what can you do? There are several herbal and all-natural options available.

One of the most popular choices in dealing with Candida is the addition of shark liver oil to your diet. It’s believed that shark liver oil does wonders for the body when it comes to improving the health of the immune system. This is important for sufferers of Candida since the best weapon we all have against Candida running wild in our bodies is our own immune system.

Another popular herbal remedy for Candida is grapefruit seed extract. Grapefruit seed extract is an anti-fungal solution that helps to raise the bodies pH back to a level where it becomes too acidic for the Candida to live. Helping to raise the bodies’ pH level back to healthy levels is an effective way to treat Candida.

Garlic pills are another common, all-natural way to deal with Candida. It’s believed that garlic can inhibit the growth of Candida in the human body since it does have some antimicrobial properties. An even more effective version of garlic, a purified extract known as allyl alcohol, has shown to be effective in killing yeast, and therefore Candida, in lab tests. The same tests have shown that the garlic can start working within hours of ingestion, making it a popular choice.

Certain oils have also demonstrated an ability to kill or suppress Candida in lab tests on animals. Natural oils from cayenne pepper, cloves and especially oregano have been tested and shown to help Candida sufferers. They showed an ability to reduce the amount of Candida in animals with a suppressed immune system and an ability to reduce the overall number of colonies of Candida in animals, as well.

Tea tree oil is another herbal remedy that has shown good anti-fungal properties, as well as anti-Candida properties. Tea tree oil works best when rubbed into the skin in areas where the Candida infection is present, like the feet or anywhere where a Candida-caused outbreak of psoriasis has occurred. Studies showed that the tea tree oil weakened the cell walls of the yeast, making them easier for the bodies immune system to kill off.

Lactoferrin, which comes from whey protein, has been shown in lab studies to help the body fight off yeasts, bacteria and even some parasites. It has shown to survive the stomachs digestive juices and make its way into the intestine where it can battle the Candida.

Because Candida is a fairly new condition and is still so controversial, there really is no medical consensus as to the best way to treat it herbally. The best choice for anyone looking to treat their Candida is to speak with a doctor, or at the very least a trained dietician about what treatment is best for you.
